Disclaimer: These figures are statistical estimates, not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a personal weight target. Ideal body weight formulas ignore muscle, frame size, age, and body fat, so a healthy weight for you may differ. Speak to a qualified healthcare professional before making decisions about your weight or health.

Free online ideal weight calculator

This ideal weight calculator estimates a healthy body weight for your height and sex using two well-known clinical formulas — Devine and Robinson — alongside the weight range that matches a healthy Body Mass Index. Enter your height in metric or imperial units and every result updates live. Because there is no single "correct" weight for a given height, seeing three estimates side by side gives you a realistic range rather than one rigid number. Nothing is sent to a server, so your details stay private on your device.

How to use the ideal weight calculator

  1. Choose Metric or Imperial with the toggle.
  2. Select your sex, which the formulas use as a baseline.
  3. Enter your height in centimetres, or in feet and inches.
  4. Read the Devine and Robinson estimates plus the healthy BMI range, each shown in kilograms and pounds.

Which number should you trust?

Treat the results as a range, not a rule. The Devine and Robinson formulas were designed for medication dosing and assume an "average" build, so they can read high for very muscular people and low for others. The healthy BMI span is often the most practical guide, but BMI has limits of its own — see our BMI calculator for a fuller picture of the weight categories.

Frequently asked questions

What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of a healthy weight for a person of a given height and sex. It was originally developed to help calculate medication doses, and it is now widely used as a rough target range. It is a statistical estimate, not a personal health goal — a healthy weight for you depends on body composition, age, and other factors.

What is the difference between the Devine and Robinson formulas?

Both estimate ideal weight from height and sex. The Devine formula (1974) is the most widely used, especially in clinical settings for drug dosing. The Robinson formula (1983) was a later refinement that tends to give slightly lower estimates. Showing both gives you a small range rather than a single number.

Why does the calculator also show a healthy BMI weight range?

The Devine and Robinson formulas ignore body build, so we also show the weight range that corresponds to a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. This span is often more useful than a single figure because it acknowledges that many weights can be healthy for the same height.

Are these formulas accurate for short people?

The Devine and Robinson formulas are defined for heights above 60 inches (5 feet) and become less reliable below that, because they simply subtract weight for every inch under 5 feet. For shorter heights the tool still calculates a value but flags it as an extrapolation, so treat those results with extra caution.

Does this tool store my height or sex?

No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your height and other inputs are never uploaded, saved, or shared, so the calculator is completely private and free to use.
