Free online sales tax calculator

This sales tax calculator works both ways. In Add tax mode you enter a net price and a tax rate to see the tax amount and the gross total. In Remove tax mode you start from a price that already includes tax and work backwards to the original net price and the tax hidden inside it. It doubles as a VAT or GST calculator — just type in your local rate. Every figure updates live as you type, and everything runs privately in your browser.

How to calculate sales tax

  1. Choose Add tax to add tax on, or Remove tax to strip it out.
  2. Enter the price — the net amount when adding, or the gross total when removing.
  3. Enter the tax rate as a percentage, such as 8 or 20.
  4. Read the tax amount and the other price instantly in the result cards.
  5. Click Copy summary to save the full breakdown to your clipboard.

Add tax vs. remove tax

Adding tax multiplies the net price by the rate and adds it on: tax = net × rate ÷ 100. Removing tax reverses that by dividing the gross total by 1 + rate ÷ 100, which is why you cannot simply subtract the same percentage. The reverse calculation is handy for receipts, invoices, and expense claims where only the tax-inclusive total is shown.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

In "Add tax" mode, enter the net price (the amount before tax) and the tax rate as a percentage. The calculator multiplies the net price by the rate to get the tax amount, then adds it to the net price to give the gross total. For example, $100 at 8% tax is $8 tax and a $108 total.

How does removing sales tax work?

Reverse sales tax starts from a gross price that already includes tax. Switch to "Remove tax" mode, enter the total price and the tax rate, and the calculator divides the total by 1 + rate/100 to recover the original net price. The tax amount is simply the total minus that net price.

Is this a VAT or GST calculator too?

Yes. Sales tax, VAT, and GST all work the same way mathematically — a percentage added to or extracted from a price. Just enter your local rate, whether it is a US sales tax rate, a European VAT rate, or a GST rate, and the calculator handles the arithmetic identically.

What currency does it use?

Amounts are formatted with a US dollar symbol for readability, but the symbol is only illustrative. The math is currency-neutral, so you can read the figures as any currency — pounds, euros, dollars, or anything else — as long as the price and rate you enter are in that currency.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. This sales tax calculator runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. The prices and rates you type are never uploaded, stored, or shared, so it is completely private and works offline once the page has loaded.
