Temperature Converter

Convert Celsius, Fahrenheit & Kelvin.

Common references: water freezes at 0 °C = 32 °F = 273.15 K, and boils at 100 °C = 212 °F. Body temperature is about 37 °C = 98.6 °F.

Convert temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin instantly with this browser-based converter. Type a value into any field and the other two update live, so you can go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, Fahrenheit to Celsius, or either one to Kelvin without doing the math by hand. It's handy for cooking and baking, checking the weather abroad, science homework, and any time you meet a temperature in an unfamiliar scale.

How to convert a temperature

  1. Pick the field that matches the scale your temperature is written in — Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin.
  2. Type or paste your number, including a minus sign for temperatures below zero.
  3. Read the equivalent values instantly from the other two fields.
  4. Click Copy next to any value to send it to your clipboard.
  5. Clear a field to reset the others.

The formulas behind the scales

Celsius and Fahrenheit are linked by F = C × 9/5 + 32, and the reverse is C = (F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin simply shifts Celsius by a fixed amount: K = C + 273.15. Kelvin never goes below zero because it begins at absolute zero, the point where molecular motion stops.

Frequently asked questions

How does the temperature converter work?

Type a number into any of the three fields — Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin — and the other two update instantly. Your entry is converted to Celsius first and then re-expressed in the other two scales, all in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

The formula is F = C × 9/5 + 32. For example, 20°C becomes 20 × 9/5 + 32 = 68°F. Just type your value into the Celsius field and read the answer from the Fahrenheit field.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

The formula is C = (F − 32) × 5/9. For example, 98.6°F becomes (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37°C. Type your value into the Fahrenheit field and read the Celsius field.

What is Kelvin and how does it relate to Celsius?

Kelvin is the SI base unit of temperature and starts at absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature. The scales are offset by 273.15, so K = C + 273.15 and C = K − 273.15. A degree in Kelvin is the same size as a degree in Celsius.

Is my data private?

Yes. All conversions run locally in your browser with JavaScript. No values are uploaded, logged, or stored, so the tool is safe to use for anything.
