Text to Speech

Read text aloud in your browser.

Ready

Free online text-to-speech reader

This text-to-speech tool reads any text aloud straight from your browser. Paste an article, a paragraph you are proofreading, or a script you want to hear, then pick a voice and press play. It is handy for catching awkward sentences, giving your eyes a rest, or turning notes into audio you can listen to while you do something else. Because it uses the voices already installed on your device, there is nothing to download and no sign-up.

How to use the text-to-speech tool

  1. Type or paste your text into the box (a short sample is prefilled).
  2. Choose a voice from the dropdown — options depend on your device.
  3. Adjust the rate and pitch sliders to taste.
  4. Press Play, and use Pause, Resume, or Stop to control playback.

Why listen to your writing

Hearing text read back is one of the fastest ways to spot typos, repeated words, and clunky phrasing that the eye glides over. Pair it with our word counter to keep an eye on length, or tidy up formatting first with the case converter so your headings and sentences read cleanly out loud.

Private and browser-based

Everything happens locally through the Web Speech API — your text is never uploaded or stored. Voice quality and language choice vary between browsers and operating systems, so try a few voices to find one you like.

Frequently asked questions

How does this text-to-speech tool work?

It uses the Web Speech API that is built into modern browsers. When you press Play, your text is handed to your device's speech engine, which reads it aloud using one of the installed voices. Nothing is uploaded — the synthesis happens locally on your device.

Why do the available voices differ between devices?

The voice list comes from your operating system and browser, not from this site. Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Chrome each ship their own voices and languages, so the names and quantity you see depend on the device you are using.

Why is the voice dropdown empty at first?

Browsers load voices asynchronously, so the list can be empty for a moment on the first visit. This tool listens for the voiceschanged event and fills the dropdown as soon as the voices are ready. If it stays empty, try reloading the page.

Can I change the speed and pitch?

Yes. Use the Rate slider to make speech faster or slower (0.5 to 2) and the Pitch slider to make the voice lower or higher (0 to 2). Adjust them before pressing Play to hear the difference.

Is my text private?

Yes. The text you type never leaves your browser. There is no server, no account, and no storage — close the tab and it is gone.
