Free online average calculator

This average calculator finds the mean of a list of numbers in an instant — and gives you the full picture with the median, mode, range, sum, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation too. Just type or paste your values separated by commas, spaces, or new lines and every statistic updates live as you go. Negatives and decimals are welcome, and any non-numeric text is ignored, so you can paste messy data straight from a spreadsheet or document.

How to calculate an average

  1. Type your numbers into the box, or paste them from anywhere.
  2. Separate values with commas, spaces, or line breaks — mix them freely.
  3. Read the mean and the other statistics as they update instantly.
  4. Click Copy results to grab every value, or Clear to start over.

Understanding the statistics

The mean is the classic average: the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value once your numbers are sorted, which is less affected by outliers. The mode is the most frequent value — and there can be more than one, or none at all. The range is the gap between the largest and smallest values, while standard deviation tells you how spread out the numbers are, with separate population (σ) and sample (s) figures.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the average calculator?

Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. The calculator picks out every valid number — including negatives and decimals — and instantly shows the count, sum, mean, median, mode, range, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation. Any non-numeric text is simply ignored.

What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?

The mean is the arithmetic average — the sum divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the value that appears most often. Together they describe the centre of your data in different ways.

What is the difference between population and sample standard deviation?

Both measure how spread out your numbers are. Population standard deviation (σ) divides by the number of values and is used when your data is the entire group. Sample standard deviation (s) divides by one less than the count (n − 1) and is used when your numbers are a sample drawn from a larger population, so it needs at least two values.

How is the mode shown when there are ties or no repeats?

If every number appears exactly once there is no mode, so the calculator shows "none". If two or more values are tied for the most frequent, it lists all of them, so a data set can have several modes.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your numbers are never uploaded, stored, or shared, so it is safe to use for private or sensitive data. There is no sign-up and no limit.
